Top Ten for Fall 2011 Part 2 - Lady Chic

In my last post, we began to look at the important styles for the upcoming Fall season. In this post, we'll examine another major trend - Lady Chic. While this trend has been on the horizon for a few seasons, it has been refueled by interest in Kate Middleton, Duchess of Windsor, and now stronger than ever.

2. Lady Chic
Donna Karan Look 22
Among the lady-like collections for fall, Donna Karan's is probably my favorite. Done almost entirely in shades of gray and brown, the look is elegant and timeless, but very much up-to the minute.

Donna Karan Look 9
Accessorized simply with pearls, pumps, or a modern bootie, and gray tights, these looks are among the season's best.

Of course, Donna Karan isn't the only designer creating some beautiful lady chic looks. Mark Badgley and James Mischka, since joining forces as Badgley Mischka in 1988, have consistently produced beautiful lady-chic looks, reminiscent of old Hollywood, and Fall 2011 is no exception. The photos below show some of my favorite daytime styles from the design duo. I love how they've included the beautiful leather gloves in their ensembles.

Budget Alternatives
Fortunately for many of us, these wonderful and sophisticated lady chic looks are not strictly of the realm of the designer world. If you're sticking to a tight budget, the looks below definitely merit your consideration.

If you'd like to add a dash of runway-style oomph to some of these ensembles, look to accessories for the needed spark. For instance, adding fur cuffs and perhaps gloves will bring the burgundy Ralph Lauren from Dillards much closer in appearance to the Donna Karan Melange dress. For modern appeal, I'd add booties in a tone to blend with the cuffs, and you've got a very high style look for a lot less than you might expect to pay. Often great accessories can be found at places like T.J. Maxx, Marshall's, Ross, and Burlington Coat factory for a song. To raise the glam factor of the Karen Kane dress, try swapping the pumps for a pair of high-heeled black booties. Other looks to try with this dress could include a pair of tall, high heeled boots, as in the Alice + Olivia look, or staying with classic pumps and adding a simple, but eye-catching belt as with the Carolina Herrera fur-collared dress. The key to dressing well for less is in studying the designer collections and then seeking out clothing with a similarity such as line or fabric. Then take a look at how the designers are accenting their own pieces. Don't try to be too exact, though. Get ideas, play a little, and most of all have fun!

Stylishly yours,
